FL Governor Tells Irma Evacuees Don’t Go Home
(Tallahassee, FL) — Governor Rick Scott is telling Florida residents who evacuated because of Hurricane Irma to not go home yet. Scott tweeted early today that residents who evacuated should wait until local officials give the green light before returning home. The governor said the storm can have an impact well after the eye of the hurricane has passed. The eye of the storm is currently north of Tampa and is expected to reach the Georgia stateline by around 11 am Eastern. Over six-million Florida residents were given mandatory evacuation orders ahead of Irma.
The Florida Governor’s office says about 5.7-million electricity customers are without power because of Irma. The hurricane has also spawned at least two tornados in central Florida. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Department said homes have been destroyed but no injuries reported.
