A police investigation in Mattoon has ended with the release of video footage after a fatal shooting/suicide involving a suspect connected to an out-of-state robbery case.
According to Illinois State Police, the incident began in the morning hours of February 13th, when the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety alerted the Mattoon Police Department that a robbery suspect from Michigan was believed to be staying at a hotel on Broadway Avenue. Officers responded around 7:36 a.m. and located 38-year-old De’von M. Coleman-Canady sitting inside a vehicle in the parking lot.
Police said officers attempted to get Coleman-Canady to exit the vehicle, but he told them he intended to shoot himself. Moments later, he fired a gun and was found with what investigators determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed no officers fired their weapons during the encounter.
Coleman-Canady was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
At the request of the Mattoon Police Department, the Illinois State Police’s Division of Criminal Investigation took over the case. Officials say the video is being released as part of the agency’s desire for additional transparency and was shared publicly after consultation with the Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office. Family members were also given the opportunity to review the footage before it was made public.
State police say the investigation remains ongoing, and once completed, findings will be submitted to the Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. No additional details have been released at this time.
