After spotting Salem a run in the top of the second inning, the Mattoon baseball team responded in a big way. The Greenwave scored six times in the home half of that frame in route to a 12-5 victory. Kamden Tinsman had an RBI single, Logan Thompson drew a bases loaded walk, Shayden Neff laced a two-run double down the left field line, and Brendan Prince had a run-producing hit in the eruption. Salem cut the lead to 6-3 in the third inning when Logan Butts drove in a run with a single and Carter Lowe hit a sacrifice fly. Mattoon kept the pressure on in the middle innings, however. After scoring an unearned run in the third, the Greenwave then scored five times in the fourth. Fletcher Gregory delivered a two-run single and Prince added two more runs batted in with a double. Mattoon carried a 12-3 lead into the fifth inning. The Wildcats clawed back with an RBI double by Owen Tennyson and a run-scoring groundout by Aaden Rostance. However, that was as close as Salem could get in Mattoon’s 12-5 win.
Three Greenwave pitchers were used in the game. Logan Thompson went the first two, Tinsman pitched three innings, and Brayden Hackett worked the final two.
Unofficial totals:
Salem had 5 runs, 11 hits, 4 errors, and 11 runners left on base.
