Thrillist.com has a list of ‘The 33 Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time,’ and it’s probably going to be a little controversial, because they actually put some thought into it, and didn’t just rank the first sci-fi movies that came to mind.
In fact, the most recent movie in the Top 10 is “The Fly”, which came out in 1986. And only NINE of the 33 came out in the past 20 years. Here’s the Top 15:
1. “2001: A Space Odyssey”, 1968
2. “Planet of the Apes”, 1968
3. “The Fly”, 1986
4. “Brazil”, 1985
5. “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”, 1982
6. “Frankenstein”, 1931
7. “Alien”, 1979
8. “Star Wars”, 1977
9. “Solaris”, 1972 . . . Not to be confused with the 2002 George Clooney remake.
10. “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, 1977
11. “Matrix”, 1999
12. “RoboCop”, 1987
13. “Blade Runner”, 1982
14. “Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan”, 1982
15. “The Terminator”, 1984
They did note that there’s only ONE movie from any given franchise on the list, although it’s unclear if that was intentional or if it just worked out that way.
The most recent movie on the list is “Mad Max: Fury Road” at #29. It just came out last year.
