Charleston won both ends of an Apollo Conference softball doubleheader Friday night in Mattoon. The Lady Trojans posted 16-1 and 13-1 victories.
In the first game, Charleston had 21 hits in a 16-1 win. Lainie Keefer hit a pair of two-run homers, giving her nine round-trippers on the season. She totaled five runs batted in. Avery Beals went 5-5 with five runs scored from her leadoff spot. Raylin Cox was the winning pitcher. Cox limited Mattoon to just one run while scattering 11 hits. She walked none and struck out two. Ava Leo went 3-3 for Mattoon with an RBI-double in the fourth inning.
Game two was tight through six innings. Mattoon scored first on Alyssa Whitley’s leadoff home run in the second inning. Lady Wave starting pitcher Layla Cole held that 1-0 lead until Charleston scored twice in the fifth. A pair of run-scoring doubles did the damage. Rylee Lewis and Lainie Keefer were the run-producers. The Lady Trojans carried that 2-1 lead into the 7th inning. Charleston erupted for 11 runs to put the game away. Meg Ritchey’s two-run single was part of the rally. Reece Good was excellent in the circle for Charleston. Good went the distance, allowing one run on just six hits. She walked one and struck out two.
Charleston improves to 9-10 overall, 5-3 in the Apollo. Mattoon fell to 8-10 for all games, 2-6 in conference play.
