New at AMC Showplace 10 Theaters in Mattoon this weekend:
- Marvel’s “Doctor Strange“ (PG-13)
Benedict Cumberbatch plays Dr. Stephen Strange, an arrogant neurosurgeon who learns to wield magic after a car accident does permanent nerve damage to his hands.
Rachel McAdams is the ER doctor who operates on him, Chiwetel Ejiofor helps begin his training in the mystic arts, and Tilda Swinton is the Ancient One, a bald little sorcerer who opens his eyes to magic and teaches him to bend reality to his will.
If you stay for the post-credits, the mid-credits scene sets up Dr. Strange to appear in the next Thor movie. And the second clip reveals the villain for the Dr. Strange sequel.
- “Trolls“ (PG)
Anna Kendrick teams up with the grumpiest troll in her village, Justin Timberlake, to rescue their friends after everyone else is captured by creatures who want to eat them.
It’s based on the troll dolls that became popular in the ’60s. The rest of the cast includes Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, James Corden, and Gwen Stefani.
The soundtrack includes music from Justin, Anna, Gwen, Zooey, and Ariana Grande. Plus, Justin and Anna do an acoustic “True Colors“ duet.
- “Hacksaw Ridge“ (R)
Andrew Garfield plays Private Desmond T. Doss, the first conscientious objector to ever be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Violence was against his religious beliefs but he still wanted to serve his country in World War II.
He enlisted as a medic and single-handedly saved the lives of 75 men by evacuating them from behind enemy lines during one of the bloodiest battles of Okinawa. It also stars Sam Worthington as his company commander.
Mel Gibson directed it and he received a 10-minute standing ovation when the movie was screened at the Venice Film Festival in September.
