Art Spaces, Inc. and the City of Terre Haute are hosting a public picnic as part of Turn to the River, a multi-year project of Art Spaces, Inc. which will reconnect Terre Haute’s downtown with the Wabash River through public art and design.
The picnic will take place at 17 Harding Street (between Terre Haute City Hall and Vigo County Courthouse) on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 from 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Rain date is September 7th) Food and drinks will be available for purchase from four vendors: Sati Babi, Twisted Fry, Tot Stop and Cajun Ice. People may also bring their own lunch. Live music will be provided by Brent McPike and Solly Burton and there is no charge to attend the event.
Turn to the River began in 2012 when Art Spaces engaged community members in planning and building concepts for the culturally significant area that once formed the center of Terre Haute’s downtown. The focus area of the project includes the four-square blocks that encompass Terre Haute’s City Hall, Vigo County Courthouse, and the Vigo County Security Center as well as a city-owned riverside property, One Wabash. Design Development will begin this fall, based on community-driven concepts for a designed walking promenade, a riverside green space and overlook, public art, wayfinding, seating, trees and landscaping. Turn to the River is made possible in part through the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Program.
Art Spaces is a non-profit organization located in Terre Haute, Indiana, providing public art and the design of public places to enhance economic growth, enrich cultural experiences and build a legacy for future generations. Eighteen unique site-specific sculptures now in the collection may be found throughout the downtown, in city parks and on college campuses.
The Turn to the River picnic provides the public with an opportunity to meet friends and colleagues for lunch and enjoy their government area in a positive and festive way, and consider ways of building access to the Wabash River from the downtown. Large images of design concepts will be available — attendees will be invited to ask questions or contribute their own ideas.
