Quaker, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, made the announcement today. The pancake “mammy” was originally created in the 19th century, based on a former slave named Nancy Green. Although the image was updated in the latter half of the 20th Century to look more like a modern homemaker, critics say the racist connection remains. That includes the name Aunt Jemima, which comes from an old minstrel song performed by white performers in blackface. Quaker, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, says ditching both the image and the name is part of an effort to “make progress toward racial equality.”
